Digital technologies not only generated opportunities for people, but also revealed the digital divide. In response, the United Nations Secretary General has called for global actions through the implementation of the “Roadmap for Digital Cooperation: implementation of the recommendations of the High-level Panel on Digital Cooperation”,[1] and “Our Common Agenda”, in particular the seventh commitment to “Improve digital cooperation”[2], which emphasizes the need to connect all people to the Internet, avoid Internet fragmentation, and protect data, among others.

MoreThe World Summit on the Information Society Forum 2022 represents the world's largest annual gathering of the ICT for development community. The WSIS Forum 2022 started from 15 March onwards in a virtual format with the final week being held physically with enhanced remote participation from 30 May to 3 June 2022 at the ITU Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, under the theme of ICTs for Well-Being, Inclusion and Resilience: WSIS Cooperation for Accelerating Progress on the SDGs. The WSIS Forum, co-organized by ITU, UNESCO, UNDP and UNCTAD, in close collaboration with all WSIS Action Line Facilitators/Co-Facilitators, has proven to be an efficient mechanism for coordination of multi-stakeholder implementation activities, information exchange, creation of knowledge, sharing of best practices and continues to provide assistance in developing multi-stakeholder and public/private partnerships to advance development goals. This Forum will provide structured opportunities to network, learn and participate in multi-stakeholder discussions and consultations on WSIS implementation. The Agenda and Programme of the Forum will be built on the basis of the submissions received during the Open Consultation Process. Furthermore, the 2022 WSIS Forum will provide an opportunity to serve as a platform to track the achievements of WSIS Action Lines in collaboration with the UN Agencies involved and provide information and analyses of the implementation of WSIS Action Lines since 2005

The ongoing pandemic (COVID-19) has further accelerated the need for accelerating the digital journey as it has significant economic impact (although a large number of Pacific Islands remained unaffected by the disease itself) imposed by travel restrictions.
